Research Project Area:

My work is currently looking at the roles that MicroRNAs play in the regulation of human Mesenchymal Stem Cell behaviour. MSCs are currently being used in clinical trials and here at REMEDI the therapeutic benefits of MSCs are being investigated in various diseased states such as osteoarthritis, heart disease and Parkinsons. Through my work I aim to further the understanding of the MSC itself and its mechanism of action. Armed with this knowledge we can potentially manipulate the MSC to yield many therapeutic effects in the above-mentioned conditions amongst others.

Professional and Personal Interests:

As part of my final year in biomedical Science I wrote an essay entitled ‘MicroRNAs and Cancer’. This is where my interest in microRNAs first came from and I went on to pursue a PhD encompassing these molecules and an area that I had always possessed an interest in i.e. stem cells. I find this research extremely interesting and stimulating. When I’m not pursuing this interest I also enjoy playing sports including Tag Rugby and basketball. I am member of the NCBES social committee, which organises various events throughout the year. I do fundraising with local charities: Enable Ireland and the North Kerry Association for the Deaf.
I also act as a mentor to first year students attending the university in Galway and assist them in making the transition from home life to university life smoothly.
